Based in Lafayette, Indiana, Dr. Hartmuth Bittner is a leading US heart surgeon with more than 30 years’ experience in his field. He cares for high-risk and advanced-stage patients with wide-ranging forms of cardiothoracic disease. The procedures he undertakes at Cardiac Surgery Associates include heart and lung transplantations, catheter-based aortic and mitral valve intervention, and coronary bypasses. Dr. Hartmuth Bittner also serves as associate professor of surgery with the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Dr. Bittner previously practiced in Orlando, where he performed a pioneering, first-ever lung transplant in central Florida. He was also integral in establishing a lung transplant program at Florida Hospital. While practicing at Largo Medical Center, he introduced new techniques of heart failure surgery. In 2017, he earned “Best in Medicine - Cardiothoracic Surgery” for Florida recognition from the American Health Council.

Dr. Bittner’s professional background includes a role as professor of cardiovascular surgery at the high-volume, state-of the art Heart Center of the University of Leipzig, where he earned his doctorate. He earned his BS at the National Academy of Sports Science and Sports Medicine and his MD at the University of Heidelberg Medical School. A fellow of the American College of Surgery, he is also active with the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
